Weight verification of freight containers as from 2016 with retrofitted systems of Hirschmann MCS

(Mynewsdesk) As from June 1, 2016, the German law on weight verification of freight containers prior to loading will come into force. For gantry and overhead cranes at ports, the specialist for overload protection Hirschmann MCS offers a complete system with MOT-certified components for weighing containers including overload protection, and at the same time permits the simple retrofit of existing systems.

The International Maritime Organization IMO has found out that approx. 10 per cent of all sea containers are overloaded because, for example, the cargo securing means with wooden planks or boards are not included, and thus differences between the real weight and the container weight registered for loading occurs. This was the basis for the draft legislation, which shall enter into force as from June 1, 2016. It says that the real total weight of a container has to be indicated prior to loading to the ship.

Weighing equipment on site ensures competitiveness

Port operators who want to be prepared for the requirements of tomorrow and want to position themselves compared to competitors after the law on weight verification of freight containers has come into force, provide a weighing device on site as from 2016. Hirschmann MCS offers a system with all components for weighing freight container including overload protection in gantry and port cranes.

Solution for easy retrofit of cranes

On account of the easy retrofit of existing systems, Hirschmann MCS makes it easy for port operators to integrate weighing in gantry and overhead cranes directly at the port. Individual components or retrofittable complete systems are available consisting of consoles, controls and sensors. By means of a customer-specific software application, the systems communicate by Ethernet with the TOS (Terminal Operating System).

Weight verification: important subject at the TOC Europe 2015

During the most important specialist fair for port, shipping and terminal technology in Europe, at TOC 2015 in Rotterdam, the new law was on everyone’s lips. Here Hirschmann MCS presented its new components and retrofittable complete systems for gantry and overhead cranes from June 9 to 11.
